American-born Henry James lived most of his adult life in England. He explored the clash between his two countries in a variety of ways -- naivete vs sophistication, innocence vs corruption, crudity vs beauty, vigor vs languor, simplicity vs complexity, moral clarity vs equivocation, outsider vs insider, freedom vsconstraint - while experimenting with the point of view from which he told his stories.
We shall read five works that trace his technical development and depict his characteristic theme of a clash of cultures: the early story Washington Square; his first masterpiece, The Portrait of a Lady; two works from his middle period, The Bostonians and What Maisie Knew; and his late masterpiece The Ambassadors.
Carole was Professor of English Literature at Hamline University, Minnesota, where she specialised in the English novel. She has published work on Jane Austen and Virginia Woolf.
