Sponsored in memory of Esther Rudolf
The Jewish world is in crisis – the trauma of the Shoah and the establishment of the State of Israel have made Jewish identity in the 21st century a complex issue. This course will unravel the past 200 years of Jewish history to explain how we got to where we are now. We will begin by looking at the major Jewish centres in the 1780s before examining the impact of the Enlightenment and Modernity, the ‘Jewish success story’, demographic movements and the growth of racial anti-Semitism and Jewish nationalism. This will give us the tools to analyse the events that shaped the Jews of today. The Making of the Modern Jew is designed for students who are new to the LJCC or have not previously studied modern Jewish history.
25 October – Introduction: What is a Jew?
1 November – The Enlightenment and Moses Mendelssohn – the first modern Jew?
8 November – The French Revolution, Napoleon Bonaparte and the Jews
15 November – The American Revolution and the Jews
22 November – The Jews of Eastern Europe
29 November – Jews and Tsars
6 December – The Emancipation Story in Western and Central Europe
13 December – Berlin, Vienna, Paris and London
20 December – Anti-Judaism transmutes into Anti-Semitism
