In this course, students will have an opportunity to learn and/or develop skills in Hebrew Calligraphy and Illumination, and to explore colour and design working with ink, paint and gold leaf on their own projects such as illuminated letters, words and/or Hebrew or Yiddish texts. Inspiration may be drawn from old manuscripts and contemporary sources. Texts may include Haggadah poetry, the Song of Songs, Hebrew poetry from Spain and Yiddish poems and texts. During the year there will be visits to view Hebrew Illuminated Manuscripts, e.g. at the British Library.

Knowledge of Hebrew and previous art/calligraphy experience are not essential. Beginners as well as advanced students are welcome. Students progress at their own rate and work on texts of their choice, in a relaxed and supportive atmosphere.

Maximum of 12 students.
