Fin de Siècle Vienna was the capital city of the huge, disparate Hapsburg Empire. Whilst the stolid Franz Joseph worked away in the Hofburg, Freud revolutionised the way we see ourselves, Strauss captivated and Mahler and Klimt challenged preconceived notions and Herzl dreamt his dreams. This course will give an in depth exploration of the city known as an experimental station on the way to the end of the world.
Topics will include:
• Introduction: Joseph II and the Jews
• Emancipation in the Hapsburg Empire
• Turn of Century Vienna: A Jewish Success Story?
• Doctor Adler, Doctor Freud and Doctor Herzl
• Race Theory and other Madnesses
• Inter-War Vienna
Paris:
• The Revolution, Napoleon and the Jews
• Heine and Marx in Paris
• The Dreyfus Affair
• Inter-War Paris
• The Politics of Vichy
Come also to the afternoon class where Patrick will look at the culture and art of Vienna and Paris.
