Fin de Siecle Vienna was the capital city of the huge disparate Hapsburg Empire. Freud revolutionised the way we see ourselves, Strauss captivated and Mahler and Klimt challenged preconceived notions. This course will look at every aspect of the culture of turn of the century Vienna. In the second half of the term Patrick will examine cultural life of Paris at the height of the Dreyfus Affair.

Wed 16th May - Mahler at the Opera
Wed 23rd May - Johann Strauss with special guest lecturer Ross Alley
Wed 13th June - Vienna Between the Wars

Wed 20th June - French Romanticism
Wed 27th June - Haussmann's Paris: a Cultural Overview
Wed 4th July - Paris 1900
Wed 11th July - Cultural Life in Inter-War Paris
Wed 18th July - Cultural Life under the Occupation
