Outside of a circle of dedicated balletomines, Russian ballerina Anna Pavlova means relatively little, but in her heyday she was celebrated with the same gusto and hero worship as any modern day movie star for her magical live performance.
To mark the Centenary of Pavlova making Ivy House her home, this course will pay tribute to her art form and discuss ballet from its European tradition through to the Modern creative overlap between ballet and dance in the work of contemporary choreographers.
Through archival material of film footage and images of performances, this course will build a picture of technique and style as well as question the role of the critic in determining how dance is popularly perceived.
