The Art of Hebrew Calligraphy

In this course, students will have an opportunity to learn and/or develop skills in Hebrew Calligraphy and Illumination, and to explore colour and design working with ink, paint and gold leaf on their own projects such as illuminated letters, words and/or Hebrew or Yiddish texts. Inspiration may be drawn from old manuscripts and contemporary sources. Texts may include Haggadah poetry, the Song of Songs, Hebrew poetry from Spain and Yiddish poems and texts. Midrash and legends related to Hebrew letters are introduced.
Knowledge of Hebrew and previous art/calligraphy experience are not essential. Beginners as well as advanced students are welcome. Students progress at their own rate and work on texts of their choice, in a relaxed and supportive atmosphere.
Vetta Alexis is an Artist and Calligrapher specializing in Hebrew Calligraphy and painted illumination. She has exhibited widely including at the British Library, The Museum of London and the Jewish Museum.
