Exhibition: The Enduring Lie: The Portrayal of Jews in the Arab and Western Media

MON
10
MAY
Exhibition Dates: 10 May - 2 July

This exhibition explores recent depictions of Jews in cartoons from around the world and reveals how Arab cartoonists are reusing images that were used in the Christian West for centuries. The medieval myth that Jews killed Christian children to use their blood in ritual practice has been recycled many times in images that show Jews as sadistic and bloodthirsty monsters. Other images continue to show Jews as interested only in money and world domination.

Also on display will be a range of original material from the collection of Dr. Simon Cohen. Dr. Cohen is a collecting addict who has built up a number of significant collections. Since the Second Intifada and the upsurge of antisemitic cartoons in both the Islamic and Western press he started collecting antisemitica to learn more about the sources of these current images.

Over 50 objects will be on display, these include a 15th century German woodcut of the Martyrdom of Saint Simon of Trent, one of a number of children thought to have been murdered for his blood by Jews. This libel had echoes down the ages and resurfaced in the Islamic world where images of Israeli leaders drinking Palestinian blood are commonplace. Infanticide of non-Jews is a variant charge on the blood libel theme. This too has been resurrected by Islamists and their left-wing European supporters.
