The British-Jewish Relationship with Israel. Is Israel an inspiration, a challenge, a problem or an embarrassment? This panel from across the spectrum of Jewish opinion on Israel will try to decide. With Jonathan Hoffman (Vice Chairman of the Zionist Federation) and Hagai Segal. Chair: Clive Lawton.

What’s the Future? 3 people deeply involved in the voluntary sector give their broad perspective on what they see as the 3 key challenges that will face the community in the next 5-10 years. With Sally Berkovic, Kate Goldberg and David Lerner. Chair: Clive Lawton.
3.15pm - 4.30pm
The Biggest Turn Offs: British Jews and the Jewish Community. A look at why a significant proportion of British Jews do not seem to get involved with the Jewish community. What drives people away? Are these fair judgements, or are they stereotypical complaints by those who never try to find out if they're wrong? With Tanya Gold and Alastair Falk. Chair: Clive Lawton
Biographies:
Jonathan Hoffman is co-Vice Chair of the Zionist Federation, a Deputy and an elected member of the International Division of the Board. Jonathan’s commitment to fighting antisemitism has grown with the problem. In May 2008 he campaigned successfully against the re-election of Ken Livingstone. Most recently he has campaigned against the antisemitic play “Seven Jewish Children”. He writes on his JC Blog, CiFWatch, Harrys Place and Z-Word.
Hagai Segal is an analyst, consultant and advisor, specialising in Middle-East affairs, geo-strategic issues, and modern terrorism. One of the LJCC's Scholars in Residence, Hagai also lectures at New York University in London and won their 2007-8 Annual Teaching Award.
Clive Lawton, also an LJCC Scholar in Residence, is an Independent Member of the Metropolitan Police Authority, a magistrate in Haringey, a senior consultant to Limmud, a freelance management and educational consultant. His creative style of teaching makes him of our most popular lecturers.
Sally Berkovic is the author of Under My Hat (London: Joseph’s Bookstore, 1998), which uses her experiences as a mother of daughters to explore the tensions between Orthodoxy and feminism in contemporary Jewish life.
Kate Goldberg has almost 20 years experience in the not-for-profit world providing strategic advice and support to philanthropists, charities and foundations. During this time she has worked across the industry, in Israel, USA and lately the UK. Today Kate is the Chief Executive of the Maurice Wohl Charitable Foundation and the Maurice and Vivienne Wohl Philanthropic Foundation and a trustee of a number of smaller Trusts.
David Lerner is the Chief Executive of Samuel Sebba Charitable Trust. He has worked for the United Synagogue, UJIA, JFS and King Solomon on day school development, fund raising and governance.
Tanya Gold is a British journalist. She has written for a variety of newspapers in the United Kingdom, including The Guardian, The Daily Mail, The Independent, The Daily Telegraph and The Evening Standard. In 2009 she was highly commended in the Feature Writer of the Year category at the British Press Awards. In 2010 she won Feature Writer of the Year at the British Press Awards.
Alastair Falk is the UJIA's Director of Educational Leadership, a former Head teacher and one of the founders of Limmud.
