Join us on a conducted walking tour of the Jewish West End of London. We visit the Soho and Fitzrovia districts where poverty-stricken Jews lived just yards from the luxury homes of the ultra rich and where synagogues competed for each others’ congregants. Meet Jewish personalities from the past including the millionaire’s daughter who devoted her life to creating happiness among working class girls; the tailor with 10 daughters who turned to running a pub; and the Hebrew school pupils studying alongside red light ladies of the street.
During this 2½ hour tour (with plenty of pauses) we will stroll along famous Berwick Street, Dean Street and Frith Street all boasting a host of sites of Jewish interest and enthralling stories such as the hilarious antics of market traders, a kosher restaurant whose most enthusiastic clientele were Hollywood stars; the school that was Jewish in all but name; and where the Great Tailors’ Strike began 100 years ago involving thousands of Jewish workers. Starting in Warren Street and ending at Piccadilly Circus.
Stephen Burstin has been conducting guided tours for 25 years and specialises in the fascinating history and rich heritage of London's Jewish community. He provides an informative and entertaining variety of tours in different districts of the capital and delights in sharing his knowledge and enthusiasm for Jewish London.
