Join us on our Jewish East End conducted walking tour around the Spitalfields and Aldgate districts. You will hear heartbreaking and heartwarming stories of impoverished immigrants eager for a new life in London and among the fascinating places we visit are
the magnificent Bevis Marks, oldest synagogue in England and dating back more than 300 years;
the site of the legendary Jewish Soup Kitchen, lifesaver to thousands every day;
first Yiddish theatre in England, scene of a real life tragedy;
and the very spot where a fatal gun battle took place between police and Jewish revolutionaries.
On this 2½ hour tour (with plenty of pauses) you will also meet colourful characters from the past including the real-life 19th century Fagin and the secret Jew who became the Queen’s physician as well as learning of the incredible Jewish connection with Jack the Ripper.
Stephen Burstin has been conducting guided tours for 25 years and specialises in the fascinating history and rich heritage of London’s Jewish community. He provides an informative and entertaining variety of tours in different districts of the capital and delights in sharing his knowledge and enthusiasm for Jewish London.
