In Masters of Nothing, Hancock considers how people behave. Not how we think we behave, or how we’d like to behave, but how we really do. It is a story of how a failure to understand human nature helped cause one of the biggest crises in the history of capitalism. Of the extraordinary extremes we witnessed from the so-called ‘Masters of the Universe’ – their greed, recklessness and irrationality. And of how the crisis will happen again unless we get to grips with it.
Matthew Hancock, MP for West Suffolk since 2010, has been elected to the Public Accounts Committee, and is also a member of the Committee on Standards and Privileges that adjudicates on MPs’ conduct. Before moving into politics, he worked for his family business, as an economist at the Bank of England and later as a senior economic adviser and Chief of Staff to George Osborne. With a degree in Politics, Philosophy and Economics from Oxford and an MA in Economics from Cambridge, Matthew is at the forefront of the debate about the future of the economy. In 2011, he co-authored his first book Masters of Nothing with Nadhim Zahawi MP, which looks at the human behaviour that caused the crash and the changes we need to make to ensure that it doesn't happen again.
David Wighton is a columnist and chief business commentator at The Times. He was previously Business and City Editor. Before joining The Times in 2008, he spent 14 years at the Financial Times where he was Financial News Editor, Chief Political Correspondent, US News Editor and New York Bureau Chief. He has also been City news editor at the Daily Telegraph.
