In her new novel, The Lovers of Pound Hill, Mavis Cheek’s archaeologist Molly Bonner arrives in the village of Lufferton Boney and creates quite a stir. With her non-country-style boots, determined manner and alluring looks, she sets off a wave of intrigue that ripples through the lives of everyone there, from Julie the barmaid at the Holly Bush to antiques dealer Dryden Fellows and even Montmorency the cat. Nobody knows exactly what she’s up to, but one thing seems certain: her presence will alter the lives and loves of the village and its people for good.
Mavis Cheek left school at sixteen with no academic qualifications. She worked as a lowly minion for contemporary art publishers, Editions Alecto and when their gallery opened in Albemarle Street, London, Mavis worked there with artists such as David Hockney, Allen Jones, Patrick Caulfield, Gillian Ayres and Bridget Riley. She left to study at Hillcroft College for Women and graduated in Arts with distinction. Shortly after, she began her writing career - journalism and travel writing at first, then short stories, and eventually, in 1988, her novel Pause Between Acts was published by Bodley Head and won the She, John Menzies First Novel Prize. Her fifteenth novel, The Lovers of Pound Hill, came out in May. Mavis currently chairs the committee of the Marlborough LitFest 2011, which launched its first annual literature festival in September 2010.
