Devon and Cornwall, have a rich provincial
Jewish history with Plymouth and Exeter
celebrating the 250th anniversary of their
Georgian synagogues – the oldest outside
London. The South-West was also home to
a vibrant Jewish community in Cornwall from
the 1720s with synagogues and cemeteries
in Falmouth and Penzance. Notable figures
came from these Jewish communities, including
Lemon Hart who first imported rum
through Penzance for the Navy; and after
WW2 Heschell Smith of Exeter developed the
contraceptive pill, thus leading the way in
women’s liberation. This special day will be
full of fascinating history with illustrations.
