Anita Brookner (nee Breuckner) is most
famous for her Booker-prize winning novel
Hotel Du Lac. However, she considered her
1988 novel Latecomers to be her best to date.
This work is about two male protagonists,
Hartman (Heart-man?) and Fibich (Nebich?),
two German Kindertransportees who become
successful businessmen. Brookner never
mentions or explores their Jewishness, but
provides an acutely sensitive and moving
account of their (and their children’s) struggles
to overcome the massive trauma.
