A talk with music by Ross Alley
This talk will focus on three belcanto masterpieces by the three leading composers of the early 19th century Italian operatic repertoire: Rossini’s The Barber of Seville , Bellini’s Norma and Donizetti's Lucia de Lammermoor. These three works are immortal monuments of a golden age dedicated to displaying the glories of the human voice. Techniques and interpretations of some of the world’s greatest singers will be compared with the help of numerous recordings, with particular interest given to an appreciation of the renewed and fascinating art of vocal embellishment.
Ross Alley is a music lecturer for Birkbeck College and has given many talks internationally, including at the Royal Opera House and Wigmore Hall in London, as well as numerous guest lectures in North America.
