In the background of this drama is a story from the 2nd century. Rabbi Meir, wishing to prove to his wife, Bruriah, that “women are light-headed” (as proclaimed at the time by his fellow sages) sent one of his pupils to seduce her. Bruriah was seduced and when she discovered that it had been planned by her husband she committed suicide.
